How to Prevent Silverfish from Taking over your Brisbane Home

Updated: Apr 3, 2022

Anyone who has ever experienced a silverfish infestation will say these critters are the worst of the worst when it comes to destruction. Although primitive and small-bodied, these insects are persistent and breed quickly, devouring all things made of starch, as well as clothing, documents and even walls! With Brisbane being a hot spot for these critters, how exactly do you identify silverfish and put an end to their reign of terror?

One of the most noticeable characteristics of silverfish is that, well, they're silver. With their silver, iridescent-like outer body, these guys look as if they have fish scales from a distance. As well as this, silverfish are nimble and move in a serpent fashion, wiggling side to side as they run, making it seem as though silverfish are swimming when they scurry. One of the most striking fish-like traits silverfish possess is that they are drawn to water, seeking out moisture wherever they go. Consequently, silverfish infestations occur in dark, humid places, such as bathrooms, inside walls and pipes, and, unfortunately, even on people's scalps. So, how can we prevent our luscious locks from these pests?

Silverfish hold a record for being one of the oldest insects around in present times, being prehistoric pests that have been bothering humans since before living in caves. Therefore, over the last few thousand years, these critters have learnt and developed strategies to avoid detection from humans until they're completely out of control. The best way to deal with them is to ensure that they can't even begin an infestation - that is, prevention. It is vital to put all food, especially carbs and starches, in airtight containers, provide proper ventilation in all areas of your home to prevent a humid environment, alongside vacuuming regularly so that eggs and larvae don't have the opportunity to become adults.
